The Real Problem with Karen
At first, I think we were all on the same page. A “Karen,” we instinctually recognized when we heard about her, was a modern-day equivalent of a harridan: a shrieking woman who demanded to see a manager. A person firmly at the center of her own double-skinny-vanilla latte-fueled universe — and one who wanted justice for something we likely deemed trivial. And she wanted her justice, now.
But then Karen morphed, and she was no longer just yelling about the mispriced jeans or a spot for Junior in baseball camp, she became emblematic of privilege. That Karen became more specifically white, and shaky cellphone videos show her railing at Black men in parks and Hispanic men in parking lots for looking suspicious. She was no longer simply a nag looking for an advertised discount, or helicoptering, but she explicitly became a symbol of white supremacy. Karen wasn’t just obnoxious, she was also likely a racist as well.
Stop recording Karen.
